Fell, Hurt & 3 Stitches..

22 Oct 2012 (Mon):

My poor princess fell on the curb while playing on Monday morning & hurt her chin. Mil bought her to the nearby clinic but the doctor claims he dosnt know how to " sew " & suggested bringing Rachel to the hospital A&E instead...

Mil bought her to another clinic & she was given 3 stitches. When i saw Rachel in the evening, I was heart broken.

But Rachel was brave; she told me when the doc gave her the 1st round of the anesthetic jab, she cried but hang on during the 2nd time. She was able to tolerate the pain of the jab & was pain free during the stitches given..

Stitches will be removed on Sat, 27 Oct once the doctor given the all clear.

Poor baby has to have her chin in plaster even during her ballet exam open house this coming Thursday, 25 Oct 2012.

Of Wounds & Burns

31 May 2012 (Mon):

Rachel suffered cuts from a fall & burns from a burning spotlight within 3 days of each other. On last Sat afternoon, she ran & fell while playing, thus grazing her knees. Blood oozed out immediately & she cried buckets. Poor girl.

Then on the following Tues, she was playing with some friends & sat down on a spotlight which was shown from the ground. Rachel did not realised the spotlight was burning hot & this caused her to leap up & screamed in pain. Another wound!

The burn wound she got behind her left thigh.

Her grazed wound on her left knee.

Fever

21 March 2012 (Wed):

At 3.30am, i woke up to a feverish little gal. Fed her paracetomol, took her temperature ~ 38.2 degrees, sponge her for a little while.

Woke up in the morning & she was still feverish. Mil bought her to the doctor's and she was given 2 days of mc.

Rachel recovered on Thurs, 22 March 2012. She would be going to Hortpark with her school mates on Friday & she's looking forward to that.

Bed Ridden

03 Feb 2012 (Fri):

During the visit to my granny's for lunch on the 1st day of CNY, we found out that my grandpa was sitting in a wheelchair. Usually, he wld be helping ard the house; serving food & drinks to the guest or helping my granny in her food preparation.

I was shocked to see him sitting on a wheelchair & questioned my dad abt it. My parents were D so they ( my grandparents), my aunt (read stepmum) & brother (read half brother) & uncle ( dad's brother) were living together.

Dad told me grandpa has this bad habit of waking up at 3am for a bath. So ard May, he had a bad fall & was bed ridden since. He does not like sitting up in a wheelchair for long & wld always request to lie on the bed instead. I quesioned how come no one informed me about this. Dad replied that i have my own family to take care off & that he did not want to add on to my worries. That's besides the point.

Poor grandpa. Most of the time, he sat in his wheelchair in a daze & only responding should someone called out to him. Well, at least he responded & recognized all of us.
My aunt(aka stepmum) told me his hunger pangs were very consistent - he wld hv already finished his lunch just an hour ago & he wld soon asked for food again.

While we were having ours & i called out to grandpa to join us, my granny said he had his. After about 20 mins, my grandpa called out to say he was hungry. My granny took some food & fed him. Another shocked came to me. My grandpa cannot even feed himself now??? My aunt (aka stepmum) told me he's very weak & doesnt have the strength to feed himself. The only consolation is that his speech is still loud & clear & he recognises everyone.

I looked at my grandpa & was suddenly overwhelmed with emotion. I excused myself & ran into the bathroom to calm myself down. What lies ahead now? I can only hope for the best.

Rachel is sick

27 Nov 2011 (Sun):

3am:
I awoke to Daddy's words being said to Rachel " Aiyo, Rachel, you're running a fever. Come, we gotta give you some medication. "

I went into the kitchen & touched Rachel. OMG!!! She was hot to the skin... really HOT. Alas, the thermometer was spoilt & there was no way we could have her temperature taken. I begun sponging her, hoping to bring down the temperature. One hour later, i fell asleep. Opps!

9am
In the morning, she was still feeling feverish. A trip to the doctor's was the first thing we did after breakfast. The doctor asked if she did complained of pain on any part of her body. I recalled Rachel did mentioned her head was in pain. The doctor then informed me that if a child complains of pain in the head, the outcome could be serious, as in like infections in the brain, etc.... This was not something i expected to hear....

He prescribed Ibuprofen & anti-biotic & told me to monitor for the next few days for signs of restlessness & always wanting to sleep. And more importantly, if the fever doesnt subside within a day or two, to bring her back again.

Needless to say, the once jumpy little bun only wants Mummy to cuddle, her refusal to eat & her endless complain of pain made my heart ache... I text the ballet teacher to inform we wld not be coming for the usual class & the combined reherasal later in the afternoon.

1pm
However, since she was feeling a little better that afternoon, we brought her over to attend a baby's full month celebration lunch at a fren's place. We stayed till 3pm & she was okay, running ard & watching TV.

But once back home, all she wants was mummy's cuddles & again, her whimpers was frequent. Finally she fell asleep.

11pm
Fast forward into the night, Rachel's tempreature was high again & i was thinking if i should bring her down to KK. But from previous experience, all they wld do is to do a blood test. And the outcome, viral infections was all they cld say.

No point in bringing her down then. Mummy here wld have to be hard working & keep sponging her. Medication was given every 4-5 hours but in the morning, she was still feverish.

Mon @ 830am
I insisted on a suppository at the doctors & immediately, or should i say, within an hour, her fever went down & was kept at bay. Yippie!!! The doctor told us not to give her Ibuprofen anymore but paracetomol was okay.

Rachel has recovered since & is back to her usual bubbly, jumping jelly bean self. We skipped her phonics class last Tuesday, 29 Nov 2011 to allow her more rest. But by Thursday, she went for her ballet pratice & the combined rehearsal @ Macpherson's on Sat.

I must remember to get a new thermometer.

Too Much Calcium Intake May Cause...

20 Oct 2011 (Thurs):

Teacher Karren (Lionel's class teacher) called me at 1635hrs this afternoon to report an incident which causes 2 kids, well, one at the moment to have diarrhea & vomitting. Reason: they ate 10 of those little tablets for calcium + vitamin B supplement.

Story: Lionel bought this bottle to sch which my sil had brought it for him to increase his daily supplement for calcium - for healthy bones & growth. He happily took this bottle to sch (without anyone's knowledge) & promptly "distribute" one to each of his classmates, telling them its good for their bones. Okay, fine.

The bottle was accidentally left in sch & 2 kids from the full day care took the bottle of supplements & happily ate 10 tablets each - without the teacher's knowledge. When teacher Karren saw this, she immediately took the bottle away & asked who gave them this. They were quick to say it was Lionel who gave them.

But Lionel was not aware that he left the bottle in sch till i called him & asked him about it. Apparently, the intake for kids at 6 years of age to be limit up to 2 tablets per day. Lionel said he only gave 1 tablet to each of his frens.

One kid was having diarrhea & vomitting according to teacher Karren. But when my sil made a hurried trip down to the sch, he was found to be stable & well. " Still running ard.. " said the teacher. We do not have any news of the other kid as he has already gone home for the day.

Teacher Karren said that she had already called both set of parents to inform them of the above matter. The parents of the boy who has gone home for the day seems annoyed & agitated over the phone. She said that she will monitor her son closely tonight. Whereas the other one seems fine & okay.

Oh dear! i do hope that nothing will go wrong & that both kids will attend school tomorrow for classes as usual & as well as ever.

Teacher Karren was also worried as she was not in the classroom when the incident happened. No adults were around either.

Sick!!

05 Oct 2011 (Wed):

Not the kids, not Daddy but me, me, me...

On the way home, in the MRT, last evening, i started feeling giddy. 3 more stops to go before i can alight but the train was delayed due to a track fault. i started to feel nausea & the giddiness became intense. i closed my eyes, hoping to ease the feeling but that did not help.

Finally, after what seems like eternity, the train pulled into the station & i alighted, with my hands shivering slightly & a little weak in the knees. I thought i may just faint anytime but i made it out of the station, surprisingly.

With the fear of slipping & falling since my knees were weak & shaking, i walked ever so slowly. A need to run over to the drain once to vomit but nothing came out.

Oh i hate this feelin!!!

I arrived home weak, shivering, having a terrible headache & feeling giddy, i promptly plonked onto my bed. Daddy came over & asked me what happened. He took some
medicated oil & massage it onto my forehead & temples. Then he went down to buy me a packet of prunes.

i puked that out too. I took some anti vomit tablets the doctor gave me the last time & drifted off to sleep as it was making me drownzy..

Woke up this morning, feeling much better though still a little dizzy. Made it to the office without any hiccups. :)

" I had the runs "

19 Jun 2011 (Sun):

Lionel was down with fever, tummy ache & vomited on Fri night. According to mil, he vomited 3 times & had the runs 4 times; 2 of which he was unaware until my sil sniff out the terrible poo smell. ( lionel sleeps together with my sil).

But on Saturday morning, he looks fine to me though weak at his legs. By Saturday evening, he was running abt & building up his legos frantically. :) I assumed he was on the vedge of recovery.

Alas this morning, mil told me Lionel got the runs again. This time, Lionel was very restless & legathic. I told him to rest more & skip his phonics class. He slept from 9am to 12.30pm after taking his medication.

In the afternoon, he felt better but i told him to stay home. We had plans to celebrate Father's Day so the evening's outing was without Lionel.

Update as of 21 Jun 2011: I believe he took another day's mc yesterday morning cos fil told me he went to see the chinese physician & was given more medication.

Lionel has a school trip to the Jurong Bird Park tomorrow & i dunno if he wld recover in time to join his classmates on the trip. But since LK has brought him to the park recently only, in fact just last month, he might forego the trip on his own accord.

So now praying he wld recover soon as the sch hols are gonna be over soon & i dun wanna him to miss out on his lessons, if possible,

All about teeth

30 April 2011 (Sat):

I copied the below tooth chart from Eve's blog with permission granted from her. Thanks gal. **ignore the pink highlighted ones. **

Look at the upper teeth, the central incisor. It states the shedding date to be around 6-7 years of a child. Lionel lost his upper left central incisor last year & till date, the new tooth has not yet erupt.

According to the chart, it also shows that the lower central incisor to shed around 6-7 years & Lionel also both left & right ones during this period. His lower left central incisor has regrown & is waiting for its partner, the lower right central incisor to grow back as well.

So as of now, Lionel still has his upper left central incisor & lower right central incisor missing.

I hv told Lionel that since his lower left central incisor has regrown, he has to really take good care of it this time round. This little baby is known as the adult tooth & will NOT be replaced by another one if he loses this as well.

His upper left central incisor should be ready to make its appearance, anytime from 6 - 12 years of age.

According to studies shown, all humans has 28-32 teeth by adulthood. The 1st set, also known as baby teeth comes thru at the age of 6 months. They will eventually have 20 sets of teeth & losing them one by one. The second permanent set of teeth consist of 32 teeth. First 28 appears between 6 - 12 years of age while the last 4, also known as wisdom teeth, starts making its appearance at the age of 20. However, wisdom tooth may or may not appear for people with small jaw. This is common & you do not have to worry about it.

I really hope for Lionel to retain all his remaining baby teeth for as long as possible. To only shed his baby teeth becos the adult teeth needs to make it appearance & not becos of tooth decay or infection. Goes the same for Rachel.

Recovering well...

31 March 2011 (Thurs):

Thanks for all concern. Rachel is recovering very well. In fact, the blister on her tongue has subside faster than expected & her mild rashes are also disappearing fast. Comes tomorrow, i will bring her to the doctor for a review & also to get a letter from the doc to certify she has recover & is able to resume classes.

Some photos taken of Rachel at home. She has been a good girl who entertains herself from reading her books, watching TV shows to playing her toys. Of cos occasionally she wants a big bear hug too. :)

HFMD

27 March 2011 (Sun):

Yes, u read the title of this post correctly....HFMD.... :(

And who has the honor..... Rachel.

She complained of toothache 2 days ago but we suspected ucler. A trip to the doctor 1 hour ago confirmed its a case of HFMD. She got 2 big uclers on her tongue & some rashes on her palms & her soles.

Prescribed medication consists of paracetoml for fever, oracort E for oral application & calamine lotion for the rashes in case she complains of itch.

So now its a period of isolation from the outside world.

Ugly Blisters

09 March 2011 (Wed):

Rachel got an ugly blister on her soles near her toes since Sat. But it did not hinder her walking. We pricked the blister, washed & dried it, applied some ointment & put a plaster over it. But unfortunately for her, another 3 more blisters broke out on Monday morning. Question marks were forming in our heads. Where on earth or how on earth she got those blisters?

That evening, we bought her to see a doc who told her its just an infection. She must have stepped on something dirty. He assured us that the infections would cleared up after 3 days. He prescribed us a P P wash, an antibiotic & some cream to apply on Rachel's wounds.

Rachel having her feet dipped into the P P wash.

Curam is the antibiotic given to Rachel to be taken internally. Altargo is the medicated cream to be applied externally.

This is the PP wash - wash once per day.

This is the infection on Rachel's feet. Do not be taken aback by the looks of it. The slimy tranparent stuff is actually the cream which my mil applied very sparingly, according to the doctor's instructions. Then of cos the redness you see is the infected wound. There are a total 3 wounds u see & another 1 more near her toes. Not seen here.

Nothing better to do but to take a pic of Lionel as well. Not intended as part of the post though. Heh.

Yesterday after work, i went over to my ils place to look at Rachel's feet. My mil was cleansing & applying the cream on her. Back at home, she was crying out for me, telling me her feet is in pain. Tears rolled down her cheeks. I really dunno how to ease her pain, feeling so heartbroken. I carried her up & tried to distract her. God helped that she saw her Seimpi music books & we went thru every single page of activities together. That helped alot & she did not whimper or cried out loud.

Then i remembered that paracetomol also acts as a painkiller so i fed her a little, hoping to ease her pain, if any. She even jumped up & down on the bed when Daddy returns. I think she has forgotten about her injuiry. She slept thru the night which is a blessing.

Pls pray she recovers soon.

2011 Fever ** updates **

What a title! Both kids got their very 1st fever for 2011. The bug found its way to Rachel first, invading her on last Fri evening (07 Jan). However, she was still very energetic. Paracetomol was given & a cooling gel pad was on her forehead thruout the whole night. Mummy's not taking any chances here.

Comes Sat, she was okay the whole day & her temperature stays at the healthy range of 36.4 - 36.7 degrees. However, her temparature shot up late in the night to 38 degrees. Another round of paracetomol & cooling gel pad was given. Four hrs later, she was still hot to touch so Mummy gave another round of paracetomol, 3ml each time.

Sun morning, she was okay but a little lethagic & restless. We went for breakfast & she was like a jelly bean immediately after BF. The bug decided to leave her body & find another owner. But mummy's still not taking any chances & continued to monitor her body temperature. Okay. Seems fine - 36.4 degrees. I called teacher Marcia to inform we will not attend any lessons today, given Rachel's just recovered from fever.

Well, the next unlucky person to be invaded by the bug is none other than Lionel. He was a little feverish on Mon (10 Jan) evening. So paracetomol was given but no cooling gel pad. Mil sponge him instead. He went to sch the next morning as usual. However at 10am, his teacher, 张老师 called to inform me Lionel's having a fever at 37.8 degrees. The school practices taking all students' temperature twice every morning & twice every afternoon.

I called mil & Lionel was brought home. He saw the doctor & medication was given. Tues, 12 Jan, he did not attend school & stayed home to rest. I saw him in the evening & mil told me he's feeling much better.

Today, 13 Jan, i'm not sure if he went to school as he was not at home with us. Will check with my mil this evening.

** updates @ 2215hrs, 13 Jan: Lionel attended school this morning & was okay. However, he still has to finish the anitbiotics given & not consume any fried or heaty food such as biscuits, chocolates, etc.

According to the Chinese Physician, Lionel's having throat inflamamtion. In medical terms, its known as Tonsillitis. It's an inflammation of the tonsils and will often, but not necessarily, cause a sore throat and fever.

Excerpts from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palatine_tonsil

So whenever he's got an inflammation, he will tend to get a fever, difficulty in swallowing food & sometimes, pain will be encountered. So long as fried & heaty food are avoided, his inflammation will recover with the help of antibiotics.

Nose Bleeding

16 Dec 2010 @ 545am:

I felt a light tap on my arms & the soft whipser of " Mummy". I turned over, knowing it was Rachel calling out. In the darkness, i could made out her little body outline. As the light from the opposite block was shining brightly into our window, i saw what made me jumped right up & called out to Daddy.

Rachel's face, the area under her nose & the corner of her mouth was covered in blood, bright red. i hurriedly switched on the lights & carried Rachel straight to the bathroom. As i turned a sec to get some tissues, the blood continues to ooze out of her nose, staining her pyjamas, dripping onto the bathroom floor & forms small little stains here & there.

Daddy grabbed some tissues, carried her back to the bed and quickly dabbed the tissues onto her nose. He asked for a wet towel as well. I grabbed a face towel, wet it & folded it over Rachel's forehead.

Slowly, the blood stopped oozing out of her nose but i can see that the inside of her nostrils are still watery. I kept changing the towel so that is always cold. I took some wet tissues & start to clean up the blood stains on her face & hands.

I got her a bottle of warm water & she drank abit. Daddy said that the blood should start to clot by now so there should be no cause to worry. Still, a mummy's more sensitive right? Daddy felt asleep there & then, leaving Mummy to do the clean-up & change the pillow case where there were traces of blood.

And i have been keeping a close watch on Rachel, making sure her nose doesnt start bleeding again. I thought that this bleeding episode had stopped long ago...why did it come back again?

Minutes ticked by & i saw that the blood inside her nostrils have clot & dried up. Daddy woke up to the sound of the alarm clock & got ready for work. He told me to call him if anything happens.

At about 745am, Rachel got up & told me she's ready for school. Guess she hasnt been sleeping well since 545am. She did cry a little & i got her pacified & calmed down. She was frightened as well, by the sight of the blood. But after the whole thing, she laughed it off when she noticed the dried blood stains on the pillowcase which i had changed.

I told my mil about it & she had had suspected that Rachel was heaty inside again. She did not remove her bowels well & ate little. And her palms were always warm & sweaty. So that explains the nose bleeding episode again.

My poor darling....

Fever

Yes again! The only word in my dictionary...

Rachel came down with a fever on Thursday (01 April) evening. Ah ma already suspected something was wrong on the morning itself. Rachel refused to drink her milk. Immediately after sch, she was taken to the doctor cos she was raging hot at 39 degrees. The doc gave her a suppository to bring down her temperature. That evening & the next day, Friday, Rachel was restless as usual & her temperature was like the waves, low on one min, high the next.

Saturday. Rachel's fever finally subsided. We have been telling her from the beginning that its Lionel's bday on Sat & if she doesnt get well soon, then she will nt be able to eat the cake. Haha! I belived she's secretly fighting against her own battle with the fever bug.

Can someone tell me hw to erase the word FEVER from my dictionary?

Visit to the dentist

Mummy: Lionel's complained of pain whenever we brushed his teeth so this morning, my sil brought him to the dentist to hv a look. True enough, he had two decays & i guess that's what causing his pain.

He was very cooperative thru out & proudly declared he did not feel any pain when the dentist did the cleaning & washing. He is due for another visit on Fri. Right now, the dentist forbade him to eat hard stuff that requires proper chewing, else the fillings in his teeth may not harden & erodes away.

Then hw is he gonna enjoy his reunion dinner on Sat if he has another filling being done on Fri? I asked. My sil told me can. His appointment is on Fri afternoon, by Sat evening, the fillings wld hv set & harden up. And anyway, our food stuff for the dinner are all soft items, no hard food. And he can also chew his food on the other side of his mouth.

Fever

Mummy: Rachel developed high fever since yesterday morning. I asked mil to feed her paracetomol. I took her temperature & its a whopping 38.7 degrees. God! I quicky took her to see the GP & he prescribed 3 types of medication for fever & throat inflammation. Doc suspected it might be a case of H1N1 since her temp is more than 38 degrees. Her temperature ranges from 38.4 ~ 38.9 degrees the whole of yesterday. And needless to say, rachel was cranky & fidgetive the whole day.

We fed her another round of medication @ 8.30pm. She refused her dinner, her milk. Mil took eggs mixed with flour to form a dough which she used it to rub over Rachel's body. ( traditional method). Rachel fell asleep at 10pm.

Thru out the night, i was monitoring her & taking her temp almost every hr. Its still the same & her body was ever so hot. ( Cracked a raw egg over her body & the egg will cooked very soon). I kept sponging her body & i took the cooling gel pad to place on her forehead. Her temp drop to 37.8 degrees at abt 3am plus. I thot the thermometer was spoiled. I made her a bottle of milk which she finished. She fell asleep again & woke up ard 7am. She didnt want any milk but she seems unaffected by her fever. She laughed & played.

But this morning at 9am plus, she became cranky again i told mil if by noon time, her fever doesnt subsided, i am bringing her to KK. Hb asked is there need to do so or not cos Rachel is also affected by her throat inflammation. The fever will not subside so soon one. Fil bot her to see the doc again & tis time, another bottle of medication was given for stomach wind. But the doc also wrote a note & instructed us to bring her to KK if her fever doesnt subside by noon.

As i am typing this post, its already 11.47am. Rachel was sleeping when i left the shop. I do not know if she's awake yet. I will be popping by later to check on Rachel.

God, pls bless my little one.
==============================================

Updates @ 12.30pm: Went down to the shop to peep at my little one. She was still sleeping. However, mil told me her fever has since subsided. I touch her forehead gently. Her temp is just like normal. Her body heat are normal too. I took the thermometer & checked her temp: 37.6 degrees.

She woke up in a little while, saw me & requested for me to carry her up. Whoa! She was perspiring. Her clothes were soaked thru. I changed for her into a dry piece. Its a good thing she's perspiring. After drinking some water, she sat on my lap quietly.

Mil came down with her lunch - watery porridge since she doesnt want to eat anything. She finished up the whole bowl & ate her medication.

Soon, she was up & about. I told her she must walk around & not sit down everytime. From the looks of it, she has recovered & is able to run around. However, i told mil not to relax yet. Medication must still be given regardless whtr a temp is running or not. So the next medication time is abt 5.30pm since she last took at 1.30pm.

( the last time when her fever subsided, no more medication was given as we all thought she had completely recovered but her temp rise again. so this time we did not want to take the risk & hence to continue giving her the medication)

Once recovered, one got it! Lionel was also running a fever. I took his temp & it was 39 degrees. Paracetomol was given. But at 1.30pm plus, both kiddos were playing & running together.

Last temp taken (2.30pm): Lionel @ 37.4 degrees. Rachel @ 36.5 degrees.

Children Day cum Lantern Festival

Mummy: Read so many blogs about their kids down with flu, cough, fever, etc. Mine was not spared either.

L developed a slight cough, which turned into serious cough with phlegm & flu since last week. His voice became rough & his eyes drooped. His face sunk in & his lips a bright red - signs of inpending fever.

On & off, he will bouts of fever measuring ard 38-38.5 degrees. Paracetomol is always on the stand-by; our home, mil's place & at the shop.

Its been a week & L still not recovered completely. His fever is gone ( temporary - i hope it doesnt return) but his cough remains. Its quite nasty as u can hear the thick phelgm whenever he coughed.

But his energy level is not affected. He attends sch daily, yells, jumps & run about as usual. Today is 01 Oct - Children's Day. He had a celebration in school this morning- Children's Day cum Lantern Festival. Each child was to bring a food item as they were all having " pot luck". L was asked to bring springs rolls. Every child was also asked to dress their best & bring a battery operated lantern.

Oh! Speaking of spring rolls. I was casually asking my sil the other day whtr did the teacher mention abt the no. of pkts L has to bring. Sil stared at me & said:" Packet?! They all come roll by roll right? U buy 1 box la. Maybe buy strawberry one lor " My turn to say:" Roll by roll? Strawberry? Where gt 1 box one? All in packet form wat." She replied:" Spring rolls are those sweet cakes right? Those that u can buy from the bread shop right?"

Hahahahahah......i laughed out loud. Sil gt mistaken. The so call sweet cakes she was referring to were swiss rolls. I was toking abt spring rolls. ( Popiah).

Sil looked at me & for a moment, i thot she didnt realise her own confusion. Then, hahaha...she laughed at her own silly mistake.
