YPS Annual Achievement Day 2012

15 Nov 2012 (Thurs):

Yishun Primary School Annual Achievement Day 2012 - P1/P2. Daddy was able to take time off & attended Lionel's Prize Presentation Ceremony. Too bad, Mummy here was busier than the bumblebee & was not able to apply leave, although she would have love to sneak off.

Lionel received a trophy - Outstanding Pupil Award.

This is the trophy.

And Lionel got this certificate for his hardwork in reading & summarizing over 80 Chinese story books.

The teacher has apologise for the mistake made in Lionel's class - it shd be 1 Respect & not 1 Independence. The 2 classes combined during Chinese lessons, hence the teacher overlooked. I am A okay with that.

This video is an edited version of the Angklung Ensemble & Band Performance on the day itself. Daddy took a few videos of more than 10 mins long for each.

Rachel's Primary Ballet Exam

09 Nov 2012 (Fri):

Rachel's having her primary level ( I just found out her grade; and i thought it was pre-primary all along) ballet exam this afternoon. There was a little boohoo made. Her exam time was at 430pm so Ms Wu told us to be in school by 3pm. At about 12 noon, Ms Wu smsed all parents to apologise for the wrong exam timing given. All exam timing has been brought forward by an hour so this means we have to be in school by 130pm instead.

Luckily, I have written a request to Little Footprints earlier on for a change in her Chinese Paper Year End Assessment from the afternoon session to the morning session instead & her principal has kindly agreed to the change. Thanks, Ms Shufen.

Rachel has her lunch, bath, changed &  I proceeded to tie her hair into a bun.

All ready..

How to grow wheatgrass

09 Nov 2012 (Fri):

This is another new project we have ongoing in our household. Growing wheatgrass! Ha.

What you need: organic soil, sprouting tray, wheat seeds, sprouting jar.

DIY your own sprouting jar; get any jar or container and a piece of mesh ( you can get those easily from any hardware shop). Spread the wheat seeds into the sprouting tray to see how much seeds goes into it. You wouldnt want overcrowding.

Now to begin: Soak the wheat seeds in your sprouting jar for 8-12hrs or overnight. After that, rinse 2-3 times to get rid of any unwanted remains. Cover the jar with the mesh & tilt it at an angle so that the excess water can be drain.

Continue rinsing the seeds twice a day till you see sprouts ( see above pic, bottom left). Spread the organic soil onto the tray, about 1.5cm thick. Water the soil to keep it damp. Transfer your wheat sprouts onto the tray, spreading the seeds around evenly. Try not to have the seedlings one on top of the other. Cover every inch of the soil. Next, take some newspaper to cover the seedlings. Shower the newspaper to keep it damp as well.

Place the tray in a dark & cool place; away from direct sunlight. Continue watering it twice a day. In about 2 days, your wheatgrass will grow beautifully.

This was taken on the 3rd day.

And measurements were taken on the 09 Nov 2012. The kids were eager to grind the wheatgrass into juice so we proceeded to snip off the wheatgrass, leaving behind about 1cm from the surface of the tray.

Wash the snipped wheatgrass & pour them into your juice grinder. Add a few pieces of ice cubes, about 1/2 cup of water. Add sugar to taste. And presto, you have you very own wheatgrass juice. You can even add honey.

The wheatgrass continues to grow....

320 Below....

04 Nov 2012 (Sun):

Earlier celebrations @ Prad Thai Restaurant along MacKenzie Rd did not turn out well: food sucks, service is slow - wrong order taken & served.. children went hungry due to the all the spicy food being served first & the children had only plain white rice on their plates.

We made up for the unhappiness at the ice cream parlour next door.

Change of School Hours 2013

02 Nov 2012 (Fri):

Got back a notice from the school informing us parents regarding a change in the school hours from 2013 onwards. The school will be transiting into a single session for all levels.

All pupils to be in school by 745am. Flag rising will commence at 8am.

For all students, lessons will begin at 8am ~ 2.30pm on Mon & Tues & 8am ~ 1.30pm for Wed, Thurs & Fri. The students need to stay in school for lunch on Mon & Tues.

I told Lionel we need to wake up between 6.30am ~ 6.45am & leave the house by 7.20am. And that he needs to save $$ for lunch on every Mon & Tues & not spending all during recess. So, we have plan to have cake or bread during recess & rice or noodles for lunch. Currently, he is having either a plate of rice or a bowl of noodles. Of cos, he will add finger food into his meals such as nuggets, fish cakes or crab stick or even hot dogs.

And us parents need to fill in the travel declaration form for our year end travel plans. I have return the form with a NIL response. Ha... ( we tend to change our plans at the last min)

And today, the Primary Ones went to Garden By The Bay for a plant diversity learning experience. It was an afternoon well spent. The excursion were conducted during curriculum hours & went from 1.30pm ~ 5.30pm.

Lionel told me he was so tired after his excursion that he didnt want to go for his wushu practise in the evening. I replied with an : " Aiyo, ur excursion is only 4 hours & u complain u are tired... then how to go Legoland? That may be a whole day event. "

His reply: " Legoland is all fun. I can walk & run around the whole day; no problem. "

Cotton Plant

01 Nov 2012 (Thurs):

My little successful planting interest. Particularly this cotton plant. So far, the results were fantastic. This pot of cotton grows beautifully day by day; with the exception of a bitten  leaf.

And i noticed a suprising fact; the leaves tend to fold downwards when its night time & open upwards in the day time.

And i'm beginning to kinder a little more interest in planting other kind of plants/flowers.
